A 26/Res.1031 18 January 2010 Original: ENGLISH |
THE ASSEMBLY,
RECALLING resolution A.501(XII), adopted on 20 November 1981, by which it requested the Secretary-General to take all necessary action for the establishment of the World Maritime University (hereinafter referred to as the "University"),
RECALLING ALSO resolution A.900(21), adopted on 16 November 1999, which acknowledged, inter alia, the special contribution of the University to the attainment of the objectives of the Organization,
RECOGNIZING the high esteem in which the University is held throughout the maritime world and the significant contributions to enhanced safety, security and environmental protection made by WMU graduates, several of whom hold senior positions in public and private sectors at national, regional and international level,
ACKNOWLEDGING WITH DEEP APPRECIATION the significant financial and in-kind contributions made by donor countries and the private sector over many years,
NOTING WITH CONCERN the financial challenges recently faced by the University following the withdrawal of funding support from traditional donors and the adverse and potentially long-term impact of this withdrawal on the ability of the University to deliver its fellowship programme,
BEING CONCERNED that previous entreaties by the Assembly, the Council and the Technical Co-operation Committee for the provision of financial support to the University have not had the desired effect,
RECALLING IN PARTICULAR the provisions of resolution A.933(22), adopted on 29 November 2001, by means of which it urged Member States and the shipping and ancillary maritime industries to commit themselves to making regular annual contributions or donations, in cash or kind, to the University,
REALIZING THE NEED for greater efforts to be made to set the University’s finances on a stable and sustainable footing,
1. REQUESTS the Secretary-General to work out, under the direction of the Council, ways and means to ensure the future financial sustainability of the University;
