UNIFIED INTERPRETATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL CODE FOR APPLICATION OF FIRE TEST PROCEDURES (FTP CODE)

1. The Maritime Safety Committee, at its eighty-fourth session (7 to 16 May 2008), with a view to providing more specific guidance for application of the relevant requirements of part 3 of Annex 1 of the International Code for Application of Fire Test Procedures (FTP Code), approved the unified interpretation of the FTP Code prepared by the Sub-Committee on Fire Protection, at its fifty-second session (14 to 18 January 2008), as set out in the annex.

 

2. Member Governments are invited to use the annexed unified interpretation as guidance when applying relevant provisions of part 3 of Annex 1 of the FTP Code for ships constructed on or after 9 May 2008 and to bring the unified interpretation to the attention of all parties concerned.

UNIFIED INTERPRETATION OF THE FTP CODE

 

Annex 1, part 3 - Test for "A", "B", and "F" class divisions

 

1. A fire door of marginally larger dimensions than a fire-tested fire door may be individually assessed and accepted for a specific project with the same classification, provided all of the following is met:

 

.1 the dimensions (width, height) are not more than 15% above those of the tested door;

 

.2 the surface area of the door is not more than 10% above that of the tested door;

 

.3 the door design does not deviate in any other aspect from the one tested; and

 

.4 the tested door has successfully satisfied both insulation and integrity criteria for the following times, as appropriate:
